St Nicolas PSHE  Intent

At St Nicolas C of E Academy, PSHE education is accessible to all. Children acquire the progressive knowledge and skills set to enable them to become happy, healthy and ambitious individuals, who go on to make positive contributions to our wider community.

Within an ever changing society, we are able to provide our children with a strong understanding of the diverse world through the promotion of British Values giving children the opportunity to discuss and reflect on key issues.

It aims to support children to understand how they are developing personally and socially, allowing them to keep themselves and others safe as they develop and mature.

Our PSHE curriculum has creative and engaging content based on a sequential Jigsaw scheme. This is supported through a strong emphasis on emotional literacy, building resilience and nurturing mental and physical health which is in embedded in our whole school ethos.

This is evident through the implementation of things such as our whole school Thrive approach, Rights, Respecting School, School Council and Votes for Schools.

Taking Care (Protective Behaviours Programme)

We follow the Warwickshire schools’ Taking Care: Protective Behaviours Programme, which is part of our PSHE curriculum.

Protective Behaviours is a practical down to earth approach to personal safety. The aim of the programme is to teach the children about how to feel safe, how to talk about their feelings and how to recognise safe and unsafe feelings. This encourages an adventurous approach to life that satisfies the desire for fun and excitement without violence or fear. Protective Behaviours help children to recognise and trust their intuitive feelings (Early Warning Signs) and to develop a range of strategies for self-protection.

The programme focuses on two key themes:

  • We all have a right to feel safe all of the time; and
  • We can talk with someone about anything, even if it feels awful or small.

The sessions are specifically tailored to meet the needs of all year groups, from Foundation Stage to Year 6. If you have any questions or queries, please speak to your child's class teacher who will be happy to tell you more about the programme.

Jigsaw

Jigsaw is the Programme St Nicolas follow for our PSHE. It includes statutory Relationships and Health Education, giving children relevant learning experiences to help them navigate their world and to develop positive relationships with themselves and others.

With strong emphasis on emotional literacy, building resilience and nurturing mental and physical health, Jigsaw delivers engaging and relevant PSHE within a whole-school approach. Jigsaw lessons also include mindfulness allowing children to advance their emotional awareness, concentration and focus.

If you have any questions or queries about the PSHE curriculum (including RSE) please come and speak with the class teacher.
